FF: Feature & Follow (4)

OMG I haven’t done FF for a while now and I thought it would be great to jump back the wagon after a 6 months hiatus on this meme. :) Ottt it’s nice to be back!! Now for today’s topic,

Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

I am torn with this one. Let me explain why. For a voracious reader like myself I hate it when I read the same thing over and over again especially with YA – it can get boring and old. Although almost all books has gotten influence from other stories, a story SHOULD be fresh and engaging. It’s okay to adapt the backbone but to have a 90% similar theme makes me gag. Authors who do this are even bewildered why they get 2 star ratings. On the other hand, fanfic does create a whole new plane when it comes to variation and mixing it up but there’s a fine line. You can definitely compare books and if the story sounds too familiar  and when you’re not giving anything fresh for the readers to enjoy. Its just rubbish. Inspiration is different from sloppy.

That’s my answer for this week, if you want to see what the other bloggers are saying visit them via the link below. Have a great weekend lovies!!

  1. Jessica@a GREAT read says:

I don’t mind similar stories myself. Authors can tell the same story differently–like vampires saving the world. Two authors will tell that story differently. What I don’t like is Author B’s version of Author A’s story. That can be boring.

  2. Hopping through. Great way to put it – inspiration is different from sloppy. Couldn’t agree more.
